What is a SEER?

One is better than two, right?  But two usually costs twice as much, correct?  Yes and No!

Yes it's true, the higher the seer number of an HVAC unit, the higher the price, but in this Alabama heat, it may save you money over the life span of the unit.

HVAC units come in many different Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, or SEER, ranging from 14 to 20 ratings.  What does this mean to you?  Let's discuss.

Let's compare a 14 SEER unit to a 17 SEER unit.  Both are energy efficient, but the 14 seer usually has a single-stage compressor  causing the unit to run at full speed or off completely.  The higher SEER  unit usually comes with a 2-stage cooling compressor and variable-speed fan that will cause the unit to run more often, but at a lower setting; keeping a more constant temperature throughout your home.  The best part of a higher SEER unit is it will help remove the moisture (aka Humidity) from the air in your home during the hot Montgomery summers!!
